COACH
HANK MANNING Currently in his ninth year as Head Coach of the Pace University Baseball Team, Coach Manning has over 20 years of baseball experience as either a player or coach at both the collegiate and professional level. His Pace teams have averaged over 30 wins a season the last four years and in that time eleven (11) of his former players have signed professional contracts.
Coach Manning was a four year starting catcher at Pace University, ranking among Pace's all-time leaders in hits, home runs, and RBI's. He played two summers in the highly regarded Cape Cod League (Brewster ’88 & Chatham ’89) while in college, and he signed a professional contract with the Chicago White Sox in 1991, reaching the AAA level in 1994 and was invited as a non-roster player to Major League spring training with the Boston Red Sox in 1996.
He began his coaching career in 1997 with the independent professional team, The Johnstown (PA) Steel. That year his team had the best overall record in the Frontier League and his team reached the championship game. He then was the Asst. GM/Coach of the New Jersey Jackals of the professional Northeast League. There he helped build a team that won the league championship in their first season.
Along the way Manning has learned the fundamentals of baseball from former or current Major League coaches. Terry Francona, current Red Sox manager, was his manager for 3 years. Mike Barnett, current Houston Astros hitting instructor, coached him for 2 years. Don Cooper (White Sox pitching coach) and Rick Peterson (ex Mets pitching coach) also coached him in the White Sox system while Manning was a player. He also played with some great athletes such as Carlton Fisk, Bo Jackson, and Michael Jordan, to name a few.
